Bamako, the capital and largest city of Mali, is served by Modibo Keita International Airport (BKO). This airport is the main gateway for international and domestic flights to and from Bamako. While Modibo Keita International Airport is the primary airport serving Bamako, there are a few other airports in Mali. For example, you can also choose to fly into Timbuktu Airport (TOM), which is located in Timbuktu, to the north of Bamako. It primarily serves the Timbuktu region.
Once you have landed at Modibo Keita International Airport (BKO), you can always opt to book a car in order to easily move throughout the area. There are a few local and international car rental companies that can be found in the primary terminal, not far from where Arrivals are located. Some of the companies that have offices there include Avis and Europcar. They all keep their respective fleets directly on airport property.
U.S. citizens traveling to Mali for tourism or business purposes are required to obtain a visa before entering the country. Reach out to the Embassy of Mali or the nearest Malian consulate in the United States to inquire about the specific visa application process. Complete the visa application form provided by the embassy or consulate. You may be able to download the form from the official website. Gather all required supporting documents, which may include a valid passport, passport-sized photos, flight itinerary, hotel reservation, and proof of funds.
