Denmark Travel Guide

The Kingdom of Denmark is made up of Jutland, the large peninsula, and several islands including Zealand, Funen, Vendsyssel-Thy, Lolland, Falster and Bornholm. Denmark also holds – as autonomous provinces – the Faroe Islands and Greenland.

The Danes have a flinty, seafaring past (the Vikings were their ancestors after all), a relaxed approach to life and a strong design aesthetic. Their central philosophy is “hygge”, which is as important to them as “chic” is to the French or “craic” is to the Irish. “Hygge” suggests coziness, a way of shutting out external stresses. It often means spending time with family and friends, eating and drinking.

Denmark is one of the world’s most liveable countries. It’s not the cheapest (sales tax is 25 per ent) but it’s well ordered, clean and safe with more than 6,000 miles of cycle tracks. Its laidback cities include Copenhagen, the capital, Aalborg, Esbjerg and Odense. Green forests and clean beaches are less than an hour away.

Pass the time with a good book on your Denmark flight. Denmark is where storybooks come true: Little girls seek their prince in Denmark’s picturesque towns while boys of all ages long for Viking horns at the site of Denmark’s medieval castles. Its coast is lined with sandy beaches and hidden caves allowing travelers booking flights to Denmark to create new tales and fantasy fables. The home of best-loved fairy tales by Hans Christian Andersen, Denmark is a storybook waiting to be explored by travelers booking cheap flights to Denmark.

For adults booking flights to Denmark for less-childlike vacations, Denmark is home to jazz festivals, fashion boutiques, and some of the most modern architecture in all of Europe. Given the climate in Denmark, the dark and cozy atmosphere makes Denmark a surprisingly romantic country. Cuddle up with a book in one of Denmark’s famous village resorts and dine on some delectable Scandinavian pastries. If the child in you longs to come out, take a break and build a fort. After all, Denmark is the birthplace of Lego, the toy building brick.

Getting to and around Denmark

Copenhagen:

The airport is only 5 miles away from the city center so it isn’t overly difficult to find your way there. One of the easiest ways to make up the distance is to go to the metro station underneath Terminal 3. You can purchase a ticket either from the automated machines or from the metro counter at baggage reclaims. The M2 line runs every hour of the day, every day of the year, at a rapid rate of every 6-8 minutes so you’ll never have to wait around for too long to get into the center of Copenhagen. If you don’t want to take the metro then there is also an over-ground train you can take, again from Terminal 3. Bus number 250S operates from outside of Terminal 2 and 3 and takes around 30 minutes to take you to Copenhagen. Lastly you can opt for a taxi but they are expensive, especially when compared to the alternate options available to you. If you can split the fare with a friend then they do work out more worthwhile. Just be sure to agree on the fee before starting the journey.

Billund:

The airport it Billund has slightly less transportation options than Copenhagen. Your main choice is to get a bus. They run regularly and are inexpensive compared to the taxi alternative, however, if you have lots of baggage or if you’re in a rush, you might find the bus service less ideal. Other than that you can pre-arrange for a taxi to collect you once you’ve booked your flights to Denmark, or you can hail one at the airport. As mentioned, the taxis in Denmark aren’t cheap so be prepared to part with some cash if you choose this option.

Cheap flights to Denmark may get you to the land of the Little Mermaid and Hamlet most efficiently, but if you’re already traveling in Europe, Denmark is easily reachable by ferry, bus and train courtesy of its close proximity to the rest of Scandinavia and Western Europe.  Bus and rail networks leave from Denmark’s biggest cities and transport you to even the most remote regions.

The train service is good throughout the country and, combined with a bus or coach, will enable you to reach any destination. Train tickets can also be used on connecting buses at the end of the journey. The Express Coach services can be quicker than trains on some routes. Check before you travel.

Ferry services are available to connect the main cities on the islands and the archipelago.

Tips for your stay in Denmark

  • Hordes of visitors are booking cheap flights to Denmark to spend time in its charming capital city Copenhagen is home to Denmark’s monarchy, which is the world’s oldest royal lineage.  The palatial structures scattered throughout the city remind visitors that Copenhagen embraces tradition, while the multitude of galleries, museums and cultural events show that the refreshing originality of modern Copenhagen is present in the social realm of the city. Copenhagen is small enough to walk around and large enough to host a multitude of attractions. If you feel like a break from the sightseeing-shopping-museum circuit, take a stroll in one of the parks or gardens. Popular with locals is the King’s Garden near Rosenberg Castle. The gardens are huge and stunning; the castle itself is surrounded by a moat, inhabited by ducks.
  • When the Royal family isn’t at home in Copenhagen, they’re jetting off to North Sealand, a favorite retreat of the monarchs, famous for its heavy forests and ancient castles. Denmark flights landing in Copenhagen will deposit you closest to this lush hamlet surrounded by the Danish sound, where popular beaches and a vibrant nightlife have earned the coastline the moniker of the “Danish Riviera”.  Shakespeare buffs flock to North Sealand as well to scope out Elsinore Castle, which the bard chose as the setting for his epic tragedy, Hamlet.
  • Art enthusiasts around the world are booking cheap flights to Denmark to admire the innovative designs and artworks produced and celebrated by Danish artists, architects and engineers. Danish minimalism flourished initially with the works of Hans J. Wegner after the country recovered from the devastating blows of World War II, and today several conventions and exhibits take place in Copenhagen and throughout Denmark to celebrate Denmark’s unique, ever functional style.
  • Looking for ways to entertain the kids after your Denmark flight? Drop your bags off at the hotel and head straight to Legoland in Jutland. The popular toy that’s thrilled children for decades has a theme park dedicated entirely to play and is located right next to the original Lego factory.  Keep in mind that Legoland is not open year-round, so be sure to plan for a visit in spring or summer seeing as the park is closed from October through the end of March.
  • You could spend a happy couple of weeks exploring North Jutlandand its main town, Aalborg. The area has wonderful stretches of beaches with dunes and stunning countryside consisting of hills and forests. Aalborg is quaint and charming, though it has enough of a buzz about it to keep most urbanites happy. The city is especially picturesque during the winter in the run up to Christmas. The Christmas Market is famous throughout Denmark and it starts good and early, on November 25.
  • Aarhusis the second-largest city in the country, situated on the east coast of Jutland. It has an “old world charm,” with winding cobbled streets and gabled houses. The city is surrounded by woods on one side and the coast on the other. It’s a great location for walking – explore the woodland, the old town and take a stroll along the beach.
  • Roskildeis famous for two things – its Viking ships and the summer music festival. The Viking Ship Museum contains the remains of five ships. It is open 10am-5pm daily and admission is free to under-17s. The Roskilde Music festival was started in 1971 and is the second biggest in Europe (to Glastonbury). Its popularity has grown immensely with foreigners in the past decade – book tickets early.
  • The statue of the Little Mermaid in Copenhagen may be the first thing tourists on the trail of Hans Christian Anderson visit. However, it is Odenseon the island of Funen, that was home to the author. Visit the house in which he was born, now the Hans Christian Andersen Museum, take a guided city tour or visit the Tinderbox, a learning center for children all about the fairy stories.

When visiting Denmark during the winter months, make sure to pack a warm winter coat, gloves, a winter hat, and a scarf. If you’re planning to go skiing or snowboarding, it’s also a good idea to pack snow pants and a few pairs of long underwear so you stay warm when out on the slopes. Even during the warmer seasons, Denmark is known for periods of wind and rain, so you may also want to pack a rain parka and a small umbrella, especially if you plan to spend a lot of time outdoors. When packing your carry-on bag, include anything you’ll need to access during your flight, such as reading materials, a digital music player, snacks, and hygiene products such as hand sanitizer, baby wipes, and a travel-sized first aid kit. Keep in mind that the shops in Denmark may not carry certain medications and certain brands of hygiene and beauty items, so it’s also a good idea to stock up on these essentials before your flight.
