Steamboat Springs is a skiing resort with a sophisticated town attached, which provides fine dining, great shopping and some of the finest snow in the United States.
The slopes are the main attraction in Steamboat Springs, and the resort has been christened “Ski Town USA” because of the high quality of its snow. Stick to the marked slopes, or take part in organised winter ice climbs to see the Rocky Mountains in their snow-bound glory. Try fly fishing through the ice or relax at specialist resorts built around the area’s hot springs.
But this isn’t just a winter resort. Far from it. Steamboat Springs offers a dizzying array of summer activities, from hiking in the Rockies, to enjoying hot air balloon rides across the beautiful landscape. Head out rock climbing, take helicopter rides, fish the many tranquil streams or attend the thrilling local rodeo. Experience the adrenaline rush of rafting down mountain streams, ride the trails on horseback or try a hunting tour with expert assistance.
The area is also fanatical about golf, with a selection of high quality local courses to enjoy, and also hosts many summer-based sporting events and cultural festivals (including the superb Strings in the Mountains classical music event).
Away from the slopes and the mountain trails, the city also has a vibrant Downtown district, where visitors can stroll past a selection of fine restaurants and find a range of boutiques and outdoor equipment outlets.
Renting a car is a great option, as Steamboat Springs is within easy reach of Denver, one of the most exciting cities in the United States. Watch the Denver Broncos in an NFL match, visit the Art Museum and the many historical sites before making the east drive back to your hotel.
This is a year-round destination with activities and events on offer almost all of the time. For skiers, try visiting in March to secure discounts on renting equipment and accommodations. For lovers of hiking or kayaking, try May or October for mild weather and smaller crowds. However, to enjoy the outdoors and the fullest range of cultural attractions, a visit in July or August is recommended.
Renting an SUV or a four wheel drive vehicle is the best way to gain access to the Rocky Mountains and Denver, but to see the city itself, renting a normal car is just as suitable. Buses will take you downtown and to the chairlifts, and are extremely frequent. During ski season, they will also take you to more far-flung resorts.
